Every professional has a set of tools at their disposal.

Again: no piece of book writing software is planning to write your book for your needs. You write your book, it might be an excuse to avoid doing the hard work of writing if you’re looking for the next “shiny new toy” to help.

I like to get up and go for a walk when i’m writing for a long time. Sometimes, I wish I could continue writing while I walk. In other cases, I show up with an idea while I’m walking, type it up on my phone, and then desire to easily move what I wrote to my laptop and never having to feel the hassle of emailing it forward and backward to myself.

That’s where Ulysses comes in.

Ulysses is a word processor for Mac that allows you to sync between all your valuable devices, so that you have the thing you need wherever you may be. Scrivener recently released their iOS app which allows you to do that as well, but the process is clunky and needs one to purchase both the desktop and iOS apps. Ulysses’ sync makes the procedure significantly more seamless.

Like Scrivener, it has a sidebar that is binder-like allows you to move documents around. Ulysses is not designed especially for books so that it takes only a little configuring making it do the job, but once you have it put up the way you want it’s very intuitive.

And while I hate Markdown, I actually like the paired-down formatting options Ulysses gives. Overall, I’m not going to convert from Scrivener to Ulysses any time soon, but i believe it is a great choice for most writers.

As Jeff Elkins says in the writeup on Microsoft Excel, it’s great, but “it’s only a little like bringing a bazooka to a knife fight. You will need only a small fraction of their capability.”

It, great if you have Excel and love. Otherwise, use Google Sheets, especially if you’re sharing a collaborator to your sheet or editor.

Grammarly (Grammar/Spell Check)

“Can book writing software replace an editor?” asks Sue Weems in her overview of Grammarly. “Nope. But it can help you improve your readability and grammar.”

If you struggle with grammar, sentence structure, spelling, or even writing style, Grammarly can help. It goes far away from built-in spell-check.

You really need to still learn skills that are grammar but Grammarly will allow you to start to look at patterns and grow as a writer.

There’s a version that is free’s very good. It can even be installed into the browser or Word processor, so you can look at your grammar wherever you write. The paid version, $139 a year, provides you with support that is additional sentence structure, style, and vocabulary.

Hemingway App (Grammar/Style Checker)
